Nature 365 - Day 230

Sunrise at Bear Creek Wetlands HDR

The conditions for bird photography this morning were pretty crappy with heavy cloud cover but the conditions for HDR photography were excellent. I spent the next hour or so working the spectacular cloud formations with the rising sun.  Did hit my first small pocket of migrants later on,  it included Pine, Chestnut-sided, Yellow, Wilson's and Nashville Warblers along with a juvi Rose-breasted Grosbeak. What will tomorrow bring?

Day Two of Nature 365 Restriction Challenge- Old School Roll of Film - 24 pictures only

I headed to Bear Creek to attempt the second challenge of the week.  I picked the location based on the fact that I usually take a lot of pictures in short periods of time there.  I quickly found out that I do in fact take way too many pictures and am quick to start firing before I've had time to think about what's in front of me; must be the bird photographer in me. :)

I slowed down and waited for exact moments before taking a picture, like with the young Mallard above.  On any other day I would have taken 40-50 pictures of these guys but having the restriction, it limited me to 6 images, of which 5 turned out good!  The one thing I'll take out of this day is to ask myself "why am I taking this picture?"

Next up - Nifty Fifty Day tomorrow, many peoples most used lens, it's our least:)

You could tell this guy was a young one when he approached us instead of bolting away! Gave us a minute to get some shots then bolted into the reeds, great way to end the day:)

100mm Macro and Lensbaby - The First Day

Love at first sight?  For the Canon 100mm F2.8 Macro it was.  After spending our first couple of hours shooting with it both Kelly and I foresee it being our favourite in no time.  It's a very sharp lens that showed awesome results in landscape, portrait (more to come on that soon) and of course, close up work.

Here are some of the very first shots taken with the our new macro lens:  some Charming Centaury;

a Bull Thistle, approximately the size of a toonie, just about to flower;

a house fly on a leaf;

a Prairie Coneflower,

and some Blue Vervain.

As for the Lensbaby , it was more of a getting to know the ropes session which yielded a couple of nice images.  It's going to take a bit of getting used to but it was fun to play and experiment with it.

Here are a few of our initial Lensbaby shots:

 Have a great weekend everyone.
