Conservation Corner - Brereton Field Naturalist's Club

Blue Heron

We are happy to announce that, finally, after over a year of procrastinating we've joined our local Brereton Field Naturalist's Club (BFN) and I thought there would be no better organization to showcase in our inaugural Conservation Corner post.

BFN is an organization whose aim is to acquire and share knowledge of our natural history.  Their mission statement states that their objective is to protect wildlife and stimulate public interest in nature and its preservation.

The BFN monitor and advise they city on the management of woodlands bordering Little Lake;  they work with the Nottawasaga Conservation Authority to manage the Minesing Wetlands; they support the MTM Conservation Association in managing provincial wildlife areas such as Marl Lake, Tiny Marsh and Matchedash Bay;  they support local rails - to - trails organizations.  (Wow, not too shabby for a local naturalist club!!)

The BFN was first formed 60 years ago, in February of 1951 by 35 local residents.  With hobby and conservation purposes aside, the club wanted to preserve the memory of the late Dr. Ewart Lount Brereton, a Barrie naturalist and amateur ornithologist.  Dr. Brereton played a key role in the building of Royal Ontario Museum's bird collection and was director of the Foundation of Ontario Naturalists.

If you would like more information or are interested in joining (or making a donation to) this wonderful organization please click on the following link:
